CU Phosco's Lighting Upgrade at Democracy Monument Roundabout Illuminates Bangkok's Historic Landmark with 77% Energy Savings

The Democracy Monument, a historical beacon in Bangkok, has received a
remarkable lighting upgrade to celebrate His Majesty the King's 72nd birthday. This
project, executed in collaboration with Tasjinda Co, Ltd, highlights CU Phosco's
expertise in delivering energy-efficient, high-performance lighting solutions.

The Democracy Monument, located in the heart of Bangkok at the intersection of
Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue and Dinso Road, symbolises Thailand's transition to
a constitutional monarchy. Built in 1939 during the reign of King Rama VIII, this
historical landmark has now been illuminated to match its grandeur, thanks to CU
Phosco's state-of-the-art solutions. This project, part of the broader "Celebrations on
the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King's 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary,"
aimed to enhance the visual appeal and safety of the surrounding roads.

CU Phosco, through their local agent Tasjinda Co, Ltd, provided a comprehensive
lighting solution featuring FL800D LED floodlights. These floodlights, known for their
performance, versatility, and reliability, were crucial in achieving the project's
objectives of increased brightness, minimal light pollution, and significant energy
savings.

12 FL800D floodlights replaced the previous 40 metal halide luminaires. They offer
full azimuth rotation and tilt functions, ensuring optimal light distribution tailored to
the monument's unique needs. With built-in drivers and the AeroFlow® Cooling
System, the floodlights provide exceptional thermal management, enhancing their
durability and efficiency. Using Samsung CSP LEDs further ensures high-lumen
output with minimal depreciation over time, maximising energy efficiency and
reducing operational costs.

The FL800D floodlights' superior luminaire efficacy of 156 lm/W and their dark sky-
friendly design with minimal glare ensured compliance with IESNA standards,
minimising light spill into the monument and surrounding areas.

The team further demonstrated their expertise by replacing mast-mounted control

The enhanced lighting ensures safe navigation for drivers and pedestrians, with
improved visibility and minimal glare. The new lighting system not only highlights the
monument's architectural beauty but also aligns with Bangkok's commitment to
energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

"The collaboration with CU Phosco on the Democracy Monument project has been a
testament to the power of innovative lighting solutions in enhancing safety and
sustainability at one of Bangkok's most historic sites. This successful project
underscores our commitment to delivering excellence in every aspect of lighting
design and implementation," said Pop Jindavanich, representative of Tasjinda Co,
Ltd.

Fagerhult launches Control Track Versa – and adds new, sustainable light to office venues

With the launch of the modular and suspended lighting system Control Track Versa, Fagerhult opens up new lighting possibilities in offices and workspaces — for both property owners and their tenants.

The new dual track combines indirect and direct, and the VIL luminaire enables 300 lux at the ceiling with just uplight. As each luminaire has its own driver, unlike a 48V system, there is no need for new calculations regarding capacity and planning when rearranging or moving luminaires.

“Property owners can easily create their own lighting infrastructure and offer tenants a whole new level of freedom of choice and flexibility. The rail system has been developed with a full focus on the offices and flexible workplaces of the future in mind. We have strived for versatility and forward thinking – and new, circular opportunities for the flexible offices and workplaces of the future,” says Peter Robertsson, Product Manager, Fagerhult.

Each luminaire can be easily combined and arranged along the track, and the lighting design can be updated when tenants move in – or want to change the interior or overall aesthetics of the office.

“The ease of moving the luminaires along the track means that all products can be used throughout their life cycle. This flexibility also brings a new creative height to architects and lighting designers,” says Peter Robertsson.

No matter the ceiling’s height or characteristics, Control Track Versa enables coherent architectural aesthetics and highest lighting quality. With fewer points of installation, the system is easy to install.

“Control Track is a long-term investment for any sustainable and forward-looking project. Based on a 230V system, you can add control systems such as Organic Response to lower energy consumption and add extra lighting comfort,” says Peter Robertsson.

New dedicated ‘after-dark’ heritage lighting consultancy launched by Chiara Carucci

Chiara has launched Noctua as a bridge between research and practice, aiming to protect heritage while embracing the future. The principle behind the company is that heritage sites are living history, and their stories should continue to be told even when the sun sets. Conservation efforts can often be focused just during daylight hours, and Noctua seeks to make more of these precious natural and built environments.

Noctua aims to revitalize spaces by integrating cultural narratives with environmental responsibility, while ensuring conservation and enhancing visitor experiences.

Chiara will apply her international and unique blend of expertise to tackle the complex challenges of heritage sites and diverse urban environments with innovative, context-sensitive solutions. She will continue to ensure successful outcomes through her adaptive management process, rooted in background analysis, hands-on testing, stakeholder refinement, and post-completion evaluation. This method, already proven through Chiara’s previous projects, will continue to guide Noctua’s dedicated approach from the early stages through the construction phase. This approach will allow Noctua to deliver long-lasting value, minimizing potential risks in terms of economy, time expenditure, ecology, while also reducing installation and continuing general expenses such as energy use and maintenance.

Noctua is a collaboration led by Chiara, Principal Lighting Designer, alongside Erik Hagström, Lighting Designer; and Dr. Rosangela Addesso, Environmental Scientist. This partnership between lighting designers and a biologist uniquely positions Noctua as a fully encompassing consultancy that draws in expertise from different perspectives to deliver a truly sustainable future. This forward-thinking interdisciplinary team undoubtedly strengthens the company’s approach to lighting design, especially in sensitive ecological contexts.

Explaining the background to the establishment of Noctua, Chiara Carucci said:

“With two decades of experience in the lighting industry, traveling for work and conferences across the world and meeting the most interesting people (and living beings) I realised that I bring a quite unique perspective to the table that I should fully embrace and take advantage of. I also quickly came to appreciate how much I enjoy collaborating with individuals who possess multiple skill sets.

“Throughout my professional journey, working alongside experts like water and traffic engineers, conservation architects, and scientists has proven invaluable. A memorable instance occurred in 2017 during a discussion about a linear park in Sweden, where the City architect raised concerns about beavers harming trees and consequently disrupting bird nests, including those of two protected species. The guidance of a zoologist and an ornithologist enabled us to devise an optimal solution for the lighting design.

“As my work in Sweden continued to broaden my perspective on the interconnectedness of ecosystems and cascading effects of our design after dark, I found myself increasingly drawn to projects that considered the needs of all living beings. I gained experience working in various environments and harmonizing the coexistence of different species. “Walking the talk” led me to an exciting project: I was offered the opportunity to design the lighting for two tourist caves that are home to protected bats, in a very delicate ecosystem. Since the project was in Italy and we had just transitioned to working remotely, I realized this was the perfect moment to scale down and focus on what truly mattered to me – serving not just people, but all living beings.

“Fast forward three years, after moving to Cilento, Italy, while continuing to collaborate with colleagues and clients in Sweden, I found myself longing for a space dedicated to informed design – one that bridges research and practice and fosters interdisciplinary cooperation and storytelling. This vision is a reality with Noctua: I look forward to welcoming forward-thinking, passionate people to co-create new ways of living after dark.

“The timing was right to bring together these experiences: under the mission to protect our heritage while embracing the future, Noctua weaves cultural narratives and environmental responsibility. Be part of the change, co-create with us!”

Demonstrating Chiara’s expertise and extensive knowledge, she recently secured a prestigious accolade, being part of the design team for the second-place award in the highly competitive LUCI awards.

The award recognizes the positive impact of the lighting design in the borough of Eskilstuna, Sweden, with Chiara acting as the sole lighting designer for the project. The project was the transformation of the Hamngatan and MDU plaza into a dynamic community space that seamlessly integrates urban amenities with natural beauty.

The award specifically reflects on the innovative catenary lighting at pedestrian crossings and the seamless integration of lighting into landscape design features. The project fosters connectivity and safety, and it prioritizes an ecological approach with measures like full cut-off fixtures and minimal, warm lighting. The collaborative effort promotes both social and environmental sustainability.

Concluding on the exciting launch of Noctua, Chiara added: “As lighting designers, we’re not just illuminating spaces – we’re stewards of the environment.

It’s our responsibility to advocate for responsible lighting practices that benefit people and protect our planet. Especially in ecologically sensitive areas, tailored lighting solutions are essential alongside collaboration with independent lighting designers who value the importance of darkness and know how to apply the right light at the right time, the right balance between light and darkness, benefiting all living beings now and for the future.”

K SYSTEM shines brightly at summer mega-festivals

Nantes (France), 25th September 2024 – Naostage’s industry-first beaconless 3D tracking system, K SYSTEM, dazzled hundreds of thousands of revellers with seamlessly automated lighting effects at two of this summer’s biggest international music festivals.

Fred Hamonou, technical director for Mawazine and Main Square Festival – among the most prestigious music festivals in Morocco and France, respectively – used K SYSTEM to save festival organisers time and money, all the while delivering an immersive visual experience with less equipment than would be required from a traditional lighting set-up.

Hamonou is a long-time fan of K SYSTEM, having utilised its automatic tracking technology on a number of previous productions, as he explains: “My relationship with Naostage goes back a long way, and K SYSTEM is a product I’ve been following for several years now, because its promising future as a proAV technology. I’d previously had the opportunity to use it on several occasions – at the Transmusicales de Rennes, for Orelsan at [Accor Arena] Bercy, with Louise Attaque at [Festival de] Poupet – and each time I’ve been convinced by the product, its execution and its effectiveness.”

At Mawazine 2024, held in Rabat from 21 to 29 June, Hamonou turned to K SYSTEM to automate and manage the complex lighting set-up for performances by Camila Cabello, ATEEZ, Central Cee, Burna Boy and headliner Kylie Minogue, which would otherwise have required multiple lighting operators for the large number of Robe followspots. With a capacity of more than 220,000 per day, Mawazine is the world’s second-largest music festival, behind only Donauinselfest in Vienna.

Hamonou confirms that, without K SYSTEM, it would have been impossible for him to meet the artists’ lighting demands. He explains: “The Robospot is a recognised and sought-after product, but it also requires dedicated spotlights with a number of operators equivalent to the number of fixtures. The demand was such that it was impossible for us to supply the quantity requested by the various artists. That’s why K SYSTEM quickly appeared to be the obvious solution.”

For Kylie and co, Hamonou specified two KAPTA sensors, which covered both the stage area and the proscenium, to enable the automatic tracking of the artists, their bands and other performers, such as dancers, and the partial automation of the lighting effects.

The world’s first automatic, beaconless 3D tracking solution, K SYSTEM simplifies the creation of immersive, interactive live experiences by identifying and following visitors and performers wherever they are within the tracking area. The technology makes it possible to automatically trigger AV, lighting and media effects in perfect sync with a live show or fixed installation.

K SYSTEM comprises three elements: KAPTA, a lightweight 3D sensor bar that scans in real-time; KORE, an AI computing unit that merges sensor data and automatically detects, tracks and identifies people moving withing the tracking area; and KRATOS, a complete user software to design projects and manage interactions with external AVL systems.

After K SYSTEM’s star turn at Mawazine, where it delivered spectacular automated lighting effects for more than 250,000 daily attendees, Hamonou once again turned to Naostage technology for Live Nation’s Main Square Festival, one of the biggest pop and rock events in France, which returned to Citadelle d’Arras in the north-east of the country from 4th to 7th July 2024.

“Main Square is one of the biggest festivals in France, and they are always on the look-out for new ideas and technologies,” explains Hamonou. “Naostage and their K SYSTEM meet all these criteria.”

At both Mawazine and Main Square Festival, K SYSTEM was driven by two full-size grandMA3 consoles operated by the festival’s lighting designers. Hamonou says the LDs, who were not familiar with the system, were quickly won over once they realised how much K SYSTEM could streamline their workflows. In fact, “on several occasions, LDs and production staff even asked us for Naostage’s contact details,” he adds.

It was a similar story in Morocco, where Camila Cabello and her team realised the potential of K SYSTEM after using it to solve a last-minute challenge associated with their Robospots. “They were convinced by the product and particularly happy with the ease of use and results, thanks to its quick deployment at the last minute to compensate for their problem,” says Hamonou.

Hamonou identifies the financial savings delivered by K SYSTEM as one of the chief advantages for organisers of festivals like Main Square and Mawazine, but also highlights the positive effect of having fewer lighting fixtures intruding into the sightlines of attendees: “There’s no need to add bulky structures to accommodate additional follow spots, which limits the visual impact of the scenic design.”

According to Hamonou, the support provided by the Naostage team during both festivals was top notch, and contributed to the positive impression left on everyone who came into contact with K SYSTEM over the 13 days it was in action for both festivals.

“Naostage helped us set up the right technical configuration, they helped us with the feasibility of the project – like adding the second bar for the proscenium [at Mawazine] – and they validated the final set-up,” he elaborates. “They were always available if we needed them. K SYSTEM is already a very mature product, but the Naostage team is always ready to listen and develop it further. They’re very easy to work with.”

Concluding, Fred Hamonou reflects on the positive reception given to K SYSTEM by all festival technicians – and the reassuring cheers that greeted the new technology among both festivals’ attendees. “We’ve had nothing but positive feedback for K SYSTEM, thanks to its quality, simplicity and efficiency. As for the festivalgoers, they didn’t see any difference, as it was completely transparent for the audience. That’s what we’re aiming for, and it worked perfectly.”

Light Forms Creates Show Stopping Illumination at Rough Trade Liverpool Location

Leading independent music retailer Rough Trade has expanded its national footprint by opening its sixth and largest UK location in Liverpool. The 6500 square foot store, located on the city’s Hanover Street, provides a new addition to the Rough Trade offering – a dedicated venue space for exclusive live performances.

The new store is set over two floors, with the brand’s infamous record store and cafe on the ground floor, while the venue space occupies the first floor. The venue space has a capacity to host 290 people, and is also home to a fully functioning bar.

Architects R2A were tasked with creating the design for the new store, working closely with trusted supplier Light Forms to meet the brief for the striking lighting scheme. The aim was to create a cool but functional lighting design, providing a beautifully lit space with well-lit displays that also creates dramatic impact.

The lighting effect was achieved by using a thoughtful mixture of track and spot lighting, utilising long linear feature tubes and perimeter RGBW lighting. A range of Light Forms fixtures were used to achieve this design, including Lightrod 80 cylindrical tubes to distribute even light all around for 360 degrees of illumination, Nova62 track spots which maintain a minimal design to blend seamlessly into the overall space, and LP1 Recessed Flat Trim & LP2.5 which provides minimal linear lighting in a discreet application.

As the lighting needs to be suitable for retail, cafe and venue applications, Light Forms supplied a range of fixtures that are adaptable and flexible, to meet ever-changing needs within the space. The range of lighting layers harmoniously spotlights products on the shelves, drawing the customer’s eye to vinyls and merchandise from independent artists and labels. The colour changing spotlights perfectly set the stage for the live performances, ensuring a dynamic display for all types of performers while maintaining an intimate atmosphere.

Lawrence Montgomery, Managing Director at Rough Trade, said, “We have been so thrilled to expand Rough Trade into Liverpool, which is a fantastic city known for its musical heritage. The modern, minimalist design from R2A reflects our brand ethos and ensures that the space focuses purely on the music, while the dimmed and dramatic lighting from Light Forms has a powerful impact in setting the stage. The design allows the location to transform from a store into a premium music performance stage, meeting our aim of Rough Trade Liverpool becoming a central hub for music fans.”

Paul Shoosmith, Director at Light Forms, added, “Light Forms was excited to be part of such a groundbreaking project with Rough Trade, finding new ways to bring live music to Liverpool’s cultural scene. It was an interesting challenge for us to provide lighting solutions that met all the different needs and requirements of the space, and we are proud that our versatile and innovative luminaires were able to create a vibrant retail experience alongside an intimate performance space.”

Just over a week after the final report of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry was released, the ICEL Emergency Lighting Conference took place, resonating deeply with the attending professionals and industry experts. The Grenfell disaster, which tragically claimed 72 lives in 2017, served as a stark reminder of the critical importance of compliance, competence, and a holistic approach to emergency lighting. With the Inquiry’s findings revealing a devastating chain of failures, the conference focused on charting a safer course for the built environment through enhanced and compliant emergency lighting systems.

Joanna Watchman, the event facilitator, set the tone for the day by addressing the gravity of the situation: “Ignorance is rife. But ignorance is not an excuse.” This sentiment was echoed throughout the sessions as the audience reflected on the tragic lessons learned from Grenfell, where dangerous cladding contributed significantly to the fire’s rapid spread. The final 1,700-page report highlighted how warnings about these dangers were ignored for 25 years – a sobering context for the event.

The conference was divided into four key sections:

Setting Context and Competence
Product Design
Built Environment
Key Contributors

Among the key takeaways from the day were the importance of the “golden thread of information”. Those responsible for building safety will maintain this to identify, understand, manage, and mitigate building safety risks throughout the building’s lifecycle. High-rise buildings will have an accountable person responsible for managing building safety by preventing and reducing fire spread and structural failures, limiting the consequences for the people living and working in and around the building.

Three key solution studies were presented on the need for emergency lighting solutions that reduce testing and maintenance burdens while ensuring optimal safety, underscoring the focus on innovation and compliance.

Professor Ed Galea’s session captivated attendees as he highlighted the need for unambiguous, dynamic signage, stating that “EVERY SECOND COUNTS” when it comes to evacuation. His research on human reaction to different emergency scenarios provided crucial insight, emphasising the passive nature of current signage and the need for improvements to ensure safety.

Some feedback from the day boasted:

“Attending the event provided me with not only an insight with what is to come in the emergency lighting industry, but it also embedded the importance of the requirements, and the steps required into developing emergency lighting systems.” Said Warren Branson, Associate Engineer at CPW.

“A big thank you to The LIA team and fellow attendees for the insightful discussions and hands-on learning. I left feeling more inspired and excited for the future of lighting!” said Harry Langdon, Operations Manager at Future Group.

Ayça Donaghy, CEO of The Lighting Industry Association (LIA), spoke passionately about the day’s success and the necessity of such conferences: “The Grenfell disaster has had an indelible impact on our industry. The need for this conference is greater than ever, as we continue to learn and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.”

Alan Daniels, Chair of the ICEL Council, also expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you to all attendees, the ICEL Council, and our dedicated volunteers for their hard work and commitment. Together, we are making strides towards a safer future.”

The ICEL Emergency Lighting Conference provided a critical platform for industry collaboration, with a clear message that only through competence, compliance, and innovative solutions can the built environment be made safer for all.

A special thank you is extended to The LIA team, the ICEL Council, sponsors, speakers, and everyone in attendance for making the day a success.

Light Forms luminaires specified in huge Birmingham office overhaul

As part of a £38.8m refurbishment of a Birmingham City Centre commercial office space, a wide variety of luminaires from high-performance lighting manufacturer, Light Forms, have been specified into the upgraded building.

The office space sits within Brindleyplace; a large, mixed-use canal-side development in the heart of Birmingham. It is home to restaurants, shops, leisure offerings such as the Sealife Centre, and a number of commercial office buildings.

Wilmott Dixon Construction was appointed by the building owner CBRE Investment Management to combine two separate sites – 8 and 10 Brindleyplace – into one large building. The transformation would also create a more modern space with a focus on smart technology, sustainability and wellness. Not only was this better from an environmental perspective, it would help to attract future occupants of the office and ensure the area remains buoyant and commercially successful.

Given the focus on sustainability, LED lighting was an important part of delivering improved energy savings and a better carbon footprint. A plethora of solutions have been specified by Light Forms, fulfilling many of the lighting requirements of the refurbishment project. These were primarily specified by Wilmott Dixon Interiors, who were responsible for the internal fit-out of the renovated offices.

Light Forms was able to offer a wide variety of solutions for the project given its well-rounded and all-encompassing portfolio. This is alongside Light Forms’ commitment to offering flexible products that can be adapted and customised in a variety of ways to best suit the needs of each and every project.

These include Lightplane 2.5; a compact and streamlined luminaire that provides direct, indirect or direct-indirect illumination. Offering the adaptability that Light Forms is renowned for, Lightplane 2.5 can be suspended, wall or surface mounted. The Brindleyplace office is using the prismatic lens for low UGR, which delivers a more pleasant and healthier working environment.

Elsewhere in the building, Light Forms Cygnus Round luminaires have been used, along with ValueDown. Cygnus Round is a minimalist, high-power LED track spot with a wide range of light sources and optics. ValueDown is a budget-friendly, recessed downlight spot fixture that may be specified in multiple outputs with a beam spread of 15, 25 or 40 degrees.

Other specified solutions include Nova Medium 62, Leo, Indus, Slimline 1.25, TinCan, Lightrod 80 and Panel Up and Under.

Completing the project are the EM surface, EM Recessed and EM Exit. These are all part of Light Forms’ LED Emergency luminaire range, which encompasses both emergency spotlights and exit signs. The lighting configuration and control was completed by Mymesh; wireless controls designed for professional and demanding environments.

Harry Prior, Managing Director from Light Forms said: “Brindleyplace offices are an enviable location within Birmingham city centre, offering ease of access, an attractive waterside setting and stunning architecture. To have our luminaires featured so heavily in this exciting renovation project to bring two spaces together was incredibly exciting. Furthermore, it truly demonstrates how much our portfolio can meet the needs of even the most ambitious refurbishments, including those where sustainability is a key part of the work.”

The overhaul has now linked the two formerly separate sites into one building, creating 212,000 sq ft of office space over nine floors. The location also boasts of the city’s largest available floorplans at over 27,000 sq ft. Other improvements include internal reconfiguration such as the brand-new reception area. Extra facilities have been added including a café, business lounge and conference facilities.

The redevelopment has achieved a number of accreditations, including Fitwel; a standard that measures occupant health and wellbeing. It has also been awarded other certifications including EPC A rating and BREEAM Excellent.
