Zumtobel’s New IZURA Pendant Wins German Sustainability Award

Zumtobel’s new IZURA pendant luminaire has won the 2025 German Sustainability Award
(DNP) in the Product + Resources category. The jury praised its modular architecture,
resource-efficient construction, and integrated digital product passport, which delivers full
transparency across the product’s lifecycle.

Innovative, Circular Design

IZURA was conceived as a next-generation luminaire built for the circular economy. Its
reflector is moulded from biocomposites, and its housing is constructed from recycled
steel—eliminating plastic wherever possible. Designed under Zumtobel’s Circular Design
Rules (CDR), IZURA follows guidelines from responsible material sourcing to end-of-life
recycling. Low-energy manufacturing processes further reduce its carbon footprint, helping to
meet ambitious climate-protection goals.

Lifecycle Transparency

Each IZURA luminaire has an online digital product passport detailing its production
methods, material composition, and recommended maintenance. The passport guides users
through disassembly and recycling, and Zumtobel’s after-sales services—repairs,
replacement parts, and warranty management—extend the product’s usable life. Soon, the
passport will include an authenticity certificate to guard against counterfeits.

Sustainability Meets Customisation

First unveiled at Light + Building 2024, IZURA combines sustainability with individuality. Its
lean modular design comprises just 40 components—no welding required—so parts can be
replaced rather than discarded. Digital profile printing enables bespoke colour and surface
finishes in any Pantone shade and even allows the integration of patterns, photos, or text in
small production runs.

Equipped with the latest DALI drivers, IZURA offers a wireless app and remote control for
dimming and seamless integration into building-management systems.

Mackwell Group: Driving Innovation in Emergency Lighting, Energy Efficiency, and Infection Prevention

Mackwell Group has a pioneering approach to safety, sustainability, and performance across critical sectors through its three interconnected divisions: Mackwell Emergency, EL&C, and Mackwell Health. Operating as a unified force with global reach, these specialist divisions work collaboratively to deliver cutting-edge, compliant and sustainable solutions that meet the complex demands of modern industry.

The group combines decades of expertise with a shared commitment to innovation and excellence, and its strength lies in the ability to harness cross-sector knowledge to create integrated systems that prioritise safety, efficiency, and health.

Under the leadership of Group CEO Nick Brangwin and Managing Director Nathan Ennis, the company has grown into a dynamic organisation. Whether it’s through compliant emergency lighting systems, intelligent energy solutions, or cutting-edge UV-C infection prevention, Mackwell Group delivers integrated, high-performance systems tailored to the complex demands of the modern world.

Nick Brangwin and Nathan Ennis have explored the journey behind the Mackwell Group, the strategic thinking that fuels its growth, and how collectively they are shaping the future across life safety, sustainability, and healthcare.

Nick Brangwin explains the key milestones that have shaped the growth of the years. “Mackwell’s journey began back in 1979, with a clear vision to develop high-quality emergency lighting components that would help shape global safety standards. That mission has guided us ever since.

A major turning point came in 1993, when we moved into a purpose-built R&D and manufacturing facility. That gave us the space and capability to really take control of our innovation and production processes in-house.

By 1996, we’d secured our first international export account, and by 1999, exports made up 65% of our turnover – a real signal that we were becoming a serious player on the global stage. In 2004, we launched XYLUX, one of the first LED emergency lighting products on the market, which positioned us at the forefront of innovation in our sector. Then in 2010, we became one of only two companies globally to offer DALI-approved emergency lighting components, which led to us supplying components for projects like the London Olympics.

In 2011, I led a solo management buyout that marked a new chapter for the business – one focused on agility, innovation, and global growth.

Since then, we’ve continued to push the boundaries. In 2014, we launched Xy-Fi, the world’s smallest emergency lighting product. In 2018, Nathan Ennis, Peter Wilsher and I co-founded EL&C to deliver turnkey energy and decarbonisation solutions. Then, in 2021, we launched Mackwell Health, and in 2024, we achieved ISO13485 accreditation to manufacture medical-grade devices.

We’ve evolved from a specialist in emergency lighting to a multi-sector technology group – operating across life safety, sustainability, and healthcare. That strategic diversification has been key to our resilience and relevance in shaping smart infrastructure and public health.”

At the heart of the group is Mackwell Emergency – a global leader in emergency lighting and safety systems, engineered to protect people when it matters the most. With a focus on reliability, compliance, and technological innovation, Mackwell Emergency delivers trusted solutions for environments where performance is paramount.

Complementing this is EL&C, the division dedicated to delivering turnkey energy solutions. Through intelligent, compliant lighting and power systems, EL&C helps organisations reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining the highest standards in energy performance and operational integrity.

Mackwell Health completes the group trio, leading the way in infection prevention through advanced UV-C disinfection technologies. By creating safer environments in healthcare, education, and public settings, Mackwell Health addresses the growing global need for effective and sustainable hygiene solutions.

Mackwell Group has evolved significantly. Nathan Ennis explains the factors that have contributed to the group’s expansion, particularly in Mackwell Health, Mackwell Emergency Lighting, and EL&C.

Nathan shared: “I think what’s really driven Mackwell Group’s expansion is our ability to stay grounded in what we do best – technical excellence and compliance – while also being willing to challenge ourselves and step into new spaces where we can add real value.

With Mackwell Emergency Lighting, it’s about quality, innovation, and reliability. It’s a global brand that continues to evolve in response to what the built environment needs.

EL&C was born in 2018 from a recognition that clients were no longer just looking for products – they needed solutions that tackled energy performance, compliance, and sustainability holistically. So, we built a business that brings together cross-functional expertise and supports projects from advice to implementation.

Mackwell Health is a natural extension of that mindset. Coming out of the pandemic, the need for infection control in public and healthcare spaces became obvious. With our background in monitoring systems and compliance-led design, we had the foundation to respond quickly, and getting accredited to manufacture medical-grade devices in 2024 was a major achievement.

At the core, our expansion is about solving problems where we have the skills and vision to make a real differenc

Over the years, Mackwell Group has diversified its offerings. Nick Brangwin explains. “Diversification has been a strategic focus for quite some time. Even before the pandemic, I knew we needed to invest in emerging markets – not just geographically, but in adjacent sectors that aligned with our core strengths.

The foundation has always been Mackwell Emergency, but the skills and infrastructure we’ve built had the potential to go much further. EL&C came out of that thinking in 2018. We saw a need for turnkey energy and compliance solutions, especially as legislation around decarbonisation tightened. It was a natural progression to go from being a component supplier to a solution provider.

Then, with the pandemic, it became obvious our compliance, monitoring, and system integrity expertise could support the healthcare sector. That’s why we launched Mackwell Health in 2021 – not to react to the crisis, but to build longer-term solutions for infection prevention and smart medical systems. Achieving ISO13485 in 2024 was a huge validation of that direction.

Everything we do across the Group is underpinned by trust, compliance, and performance in safety-critical environments. That focus has enabled us to diversify without diluting our identity.”

Together, the divisions of Mackwell Group form a powerful network that redefines what it means to be future-ready. Nathan Ennis goes on to explain the industry trends that have played a pivotal role in driving the group’s growth in recent years. “There have been a few key trends that have really shaped how we operate and where we’ve invested.

In emergency lighting, technology is transforming expectations. It’s no longer just a passive compliance product – clients now want smart, connected systems that enable remote monitoring, automated testing, and full integration with building management systems. That’s been a huge area of innovation for us.

We’ve also seen a stronger global focus on fire safety, especially in complex environments like hospitals, airports, and commercial buildings. That plays directly into our strengths in compliance and engineering integrity.

Market-wise, in places like the Middle East, growth is being fuelled by new infrastructure and economic development. Those regions are looking for top-tier, compliant systems, and our presence there positions us well.

Meanwhile, in mature markets like the UK and Europe, growth is being driven by retrofitting, sustainability mandates, and long-term resilience. That’s the sweet spot for EL&C, where we can really help customers meet regulatory and ESG goals.

We’re always listening to what the market needs – and making sure we’re positioned to meet it.”

With a future-focused strategy and a leadership team driven by purpose, Mackwell Group is not only responding to today’s challenges but actively shaping the standards of tomorrow. Whether it’s through pioneering emergency lighting, smart energy solutions, or advanced infection prevention technologies, Mackwell Group is a trusted partner in building safer, more resilient, and more sustainable environments worldwide.

P&A Projects supplies bespoke lighting for Medical Protection Society head office

UK designers and manufacturers of lighting equipment, P&A Projects, have added another successful project to their portfolio with the completion of a bespoke project at the Medical Protection Society’s head office.

The Medical Protection Society (MPS) has recently overhauled its head office in response to changing office attendance patterns, making it more suitable for modern working life.

MPS occupied a 70,000ft square office at Victoria House in Leeds. As hybrid working has continued post-COVID, some of the space was underused on a daily basis. Workplace transformation specialists TSK Group were appointed to re-evaluate the special needs of the business.

Following a series of workshops and data analysis, TSK identified that MPS could operate effectively within 35,000 sq. ft. The remaining 40,000 sq. ft has been transformed into a separate workspace that can be sublet. This not only uses the office space much more efficiently, it also provides an additional income for MPS.

P&A Projects were appointed to the project by TSK to supply and design bespoke lighting features for the open circulation, reception and office breakout areas. The brief also included lighting for the meeting rooms and canteen spaces. The P&A Projects team also provided sample lighting calculations for the areas to ensure they met lighting guidelines.

In the meeting rooms, P&A Projects has supplied bespoke lengths of their Subspace 70 architectural linear luminaires. The bespoke lengths were designed to fit within the acoustic ceiling rafts; providing general lighting in compliance with guidelines. In some of the meeting rooms, five suspended Sabre 2000mm pendants have also been fitted.

To illuminate the main canteen and breakout space, 14 Suspended Subspace 50’s have been installed, designed to imitate a grid ceiling. P&A Projects specifically supplied a lighting calculation for this area, to ensure the design provides general lighting in accordance with guidelines.

Elsewhere in the breakout and casual meeting areas, P&A Projects supplied two bespoke recessed versions of the Subspace 50. This has been installed in a similar style to a goal post, travelling vertically up the wall, along the ceiling and back down the opposite side. The dimensions are 6223mm x 2700mm.

In the same area, a bespoke twin rail biophilic planter feature in gold has been created. This comprises six planters and 6 glass pendants, mounted within a suspended twin curved rail pendant. A suspended POLO 90mm biophilic pendant, complete with plants and a neon 360° LED rope pendant, has also been fitted. Elsewhere, 3 bespoke biophilic oval pendants – 2000mm x 1200mm – complete with hanging plants, bring greenery and nature into the space.

Completing the biophilic design, three suspended POLO 900mm have been partnered with an acoustic moss infill.

The P&A Project luminaires were installed by electrical contractor Performance Electrical.

Neil McClymont, Lighting Design & Technical Manager at P&A Projects said: “MPS has demonstrated its forward thinking values, adapting the changing needs of the workforce while also making the best commercial value from their head office. The newly transformed office looks fantastic and will provide comfortable and productive working spaces for employees and tenants. It was a fantastic opportunity for P&A Projects to demonstrate how our bespoke lighting fixtures can meet the needs of each individual space and requirements.”

Grant Dean, Lead Designer at TSK added: “Lighting played a huge role in this project. Every area has feature ceilings with integrated lighting. From up-lighting and wall lighting to suspended and under-counter lighting, every detail was considered. Even the planters and cupboards have illuminated elements.

“As designers, we don’t often get to indulge in this level of detail, which made this project truly special. The lighting is also fully controllable, with pre-programmed settings in meeting rooms, ranging from bright to moody and atmospheric. This flexibility was essential, particularly in supporting neurodiverse needs.”

Sustainability has been embedded throughout the project, from upgrading the building fabric with energy efficient glazing to removing outdated gas systems. These extensive changes have resulted in the building now holding an EPC Rating B and a BREEAM Excellent award.

Shaping Scotland's First Inland Surf Resort with Smart Lighting

Thorn Lighting's advanced luminaires, including Caelon RGBW Bluetooth, Urba, and
Contrast with Bluetooth, have been carefully selected to enhance the Lost Shore
Surf Resort in Edinburgh. The scheme ensures a visually appealing and functional
environment but also addresses the site's proximity to Edinburgh Airport by
minimising upward light.

Located in Ratho, just 25 minutes from Edinburgh city centre, Lost Shore is the
world's first inland surf resort and home to Europe's largest wave pool. The lagoon,
three times the size of the Wembley football pitch, generates up to 1,000 waves per
hour, creating an unparalleled experience for surfers of all abilities. Beyond the
water, the resort features luxury accommodation, a waterfront bar and restaurant, a
surf school, and wellness facilities, establishing itself as a major attraction for surfers
and visitors alike.

Lighting played a sensitive role in shaping the resort's identity. It needed to enhance
the natural beauty of the surroundings, complement the resort's striking architecture,
and create a safe, welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Engaged by landscape
architect HarrisonStevens, Thorn Lighting's solutions were carefully chosen to
achieve this vision, ensuring a seamless blend of performance, aesthetics, and
sustainability.

Addressing Challenges with Precision Lighting

Lost Shore's proximity to Edinburgh Airport posed a significant challenge in terms of
light control. The design had to carefully prevent any upward light spill which could
interfere with flight paths while ensuring effective, safe illumination across the resort.
Similarly, the lighting design needed to respect the site's woodland setting, again
preserving the night sky while enhancing key architectural and landscape elements.

A Thoughtful Lighting Design

Thorn Lighting implemented a tailored scheme that enhances the built environment
and natural surroundings to meet these challenges. Caelon S RGBW Bluetooth
spotlights were selected to illuminate the dramatic cliff faces bordering the lagoon.
Typically used for bridge and façade lighting, these luminaires were specified to
highlight the rugged rock formations, creating an impressive yet controlled effect.
Their tight optical control ensures precise lighting while minimising glare—an
essential consideration for night surfers.

Urba lanterns (IDA Dark Sky Approved, 3000K) were installed in the car parks and
arrival areas. These luminaires provide high-quality urban lighting while reducing
light pollution, supporting the resort's commitment to sustainability. Designed by
Wilmotte & Industries, the Urba lanterns ensure a sophisticated yet understated
presence that guides visitors safely through the space.

Contrast floodlights on multi-head columns throughout the resort offer flexible,
Bluetooth-controlled illumination, allowing different lighting scenes to be created for
various events and activities. This adaptability ensures that the resort remains
visually dynamic, with the lighting enhancing the overall atmosphere while
maintaining a sleek, modern aesthetic.

Enhancing Visitor Experience with Smart, Sustainable Lighting

A balance of aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability drove the selection of
Thorn's luminaires. The ability to adjust lighting intensity and colour via Bluetooth
ensures that different areas of the resort can be tailored to specific activities, from
vibrant event lighting to more subtle ambient settings. This adaptability contributes
to the resort's distinctive identity while reducing energy consumption and minimising
environmental impact.

Debbie Harrison, Associate Director at HarrisonStevens, commented:
"Lighting the Lost Shore Surf Resort was both exciting and challenging. Its proximity
to Edinburgh airport and situation within a country park setting were the key factors
which informed the lighting solutions. The resulting design is compliant and
respectful of its surroundings. Thorn worked with our brief, the client’s budget and
the design team requirements to create an atmospheric and sustainable scheme.”

A Resort Built to Inspire

As the first inland surf resort of its kind, Lost Shore is set to become a major tourism
and sporting destination. Thorn Lighting's innovative solutions have played a key
role in realising this vision, ensuring that the lighting not only enhances the resort's
features but also supports its long-term sustainability goals. With recognition from
the Architectural Excellence Award (Public Use) 2025, Lost Shore is a testament to
the power of thoughtful design, proving that lighting can shape experiences, define
spaces, and create an unforgettable sense of place.

Acrospire Illuminates London’s Morgan’s Walk Development with Contemporary Chelsea Lanterns

Set against the riverside backdrop of Battersea, London’s Morgan’s
Walk development has been enhanced with Acrospire’s contemporary Chelsea
lanterns – blending modern lighting performance with a design that complements the
area’s sought-after aesthetic.

Nestled along the River Thames between Battersea Bridge and the landmark
Montevetro building, Morgan's Walk is a sought-after private estate renowned for its
blend of modern living and scenic surroundings.
With 66 houses and 156 flats set within ten acres of landscaped gardens, the estate
offers a tranquil escape in the heart of London. However, as the existing lighting
infrastructure aged, residents sought a solution that would enhance safety, maintain
the aesthetic integrity of the estate, and provide energy efficiency.

Morgan's Walk Management Ltd partnered with Acrospire to deliver a modern,
visually appealing, and high-performance lighting upgrade that would meet the
unique needs of the estate while ensuring minimal disruption to the local
environment.

53 Chelsea lanterns by Acrospire were installed across the estate. The Chelsea is a
contemporary amenity lantern, designed to offer superior photometric performance
while blending seamlessly into modern urban environments. The Morgan's Walk
team selected Chelsea for its sleek, modern design, which harmonises with the
estate's architectural style both during the day and at night. To enhance safety, the

SYMAREAWIDE lens provides a symmetrical wide beam, ensuring even illumination
across communal areas and walkways and helping residents feel safer after dark.
A 3000K colour temperature was specified to align with best practices for urban
wildlife protection, minimising light pollution along the Thames. The lanterns also
boast an IK10++ impact rating, ensuring long-lasting performance that withstands
potential damage and environmental wear. Finally, they carry an industry-leading 12
year warranty.

The new lighting installation at Morgan's Walk successfully enhances both safety
and aesthetics while providing a sustainable solution that aligns with the estate's
long-term maintenance and environmental goals.

Michael Stark, Director of Morgan's Walk Management Ltd, commented, "We chose
Acrospire's Chelsea lanterns over competitor products because they not only looked
great when illuminated but also complemented the estate beautifully during the day.
Other options lacked a bowl, which meant they could attract insects and
cobwebs—an issue we wanted to avoid, especially in a riverside location. The
Chelsea lantern is competitively priced and offers a particularly long warranty,
minimising future maintenance costs. The service from Acrospire was second to
none, ensuring a seamless installation and an excellent final result."
