TRILUX and Sweco Deliver Circular Lighting Upgrade in Maidenhead

UK, July 2025 – TRILUX partnered with Sweco UK Ltd to deliver a circular lighting upgrade at the consultancy’s Maidenhead office. By refurbishing and upgrading the existing fluorescent luminaires, the project significantly reduced waste and improved the quality and efficiency of lighting in the open-plan workspace.
Sweco UK Ltd, a leader in sustainable engineering and design, recently partnered with TRILUX to deliver a circular lighting refurbishment at its Maidenhead office. The project involved upgrading old fluorescent luminaires installed in multi-service chilled beams on the first floor, bringing a more sustainable, energy-efficient, and visually comfortable lighting solution to the space.

A Circular Collaboration

The collaboration was underpinned by shared values around climate responsibility, circularity, and the creation of better environments. Both Sweco and TRILUX are committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and see the transition to a circular economy as key to addressing climate and resource challenges. This shared ambition shaped the project’s approach—from minimising waste through luminaire refurbishment to enhancing lighting quality and workplace wellbeing.

TRILUX’s innovative approach to circular economy enabled Sweco to retain and upgrade many of the existing luminaires, avoiding unnecessary waste and delivering significant carbon savings compared to a full luminaire replacement.

Designing with Sustainability in Mind

A successful mock-up helped secure the project, with TRILUX presenting a customised trial luminaire that modernised the appearance and performance of the original fittings. Outdated louvres were replaced with micro-prismatic diffusers, enhancing glare control and visual comfort while preserving the architectural integrity of the space.

Conor O’Donoghue, Operations Director at Sweco UK Ltd, commented: “This project demonstrates the impact of thoughtful design and strong collaboration. At Sweco, we aim to lead by example when it comes to sustainability. By reusing and refurbishing rather than replacing, we not only minimised waste but improved the quality of the office lighting for our team. TRILUX supported us every step of the way, ensuring the results met both our operational needs and circular economy objectives.”

A Blueprint for Future Projects

The refurbishment marks another milestone in TRILUX’s mission to support clients in making the shift towards a circular economy. It also sets a strong precedent for future upgrades within Sweco’s UK office portfolio, proving that sustainable design can sit side-by-side with performance and aesthetics.

Antwerp Central Station unveils new Pharos-controlled lighting scheme

Central Station, Antwerp, Belgium

July, 2025

A new identity has been unveiled for Antwerp’s stunning Central Station with a beautiful illumination scheme, controlled by a system from Pharos Architectural Controls.

Antwerp Central Station, inaugurated in 1905, is an architectural highlight of the Belgian city. Known as the ‘Railway Cathedral’, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. Influenced by the Belgian art nouveau movement, the station is iconic thanks to its 75-m high dome sitting atop the main hall, with a 44-m high arched glass roof covering the tracks.

The lighting is part of a wider public lighting scheme, commissioned by Antwerp City Council to make the Belgian city’s nightscape safe and welcoming. Susanna Antico Lighting Design Studio was appointed to create the lighting design scheme for the Central Station. The illuminations needed to be contemporary and future-orientated, focusing on the building and the surrounding environment. A system from Pharos Architectural Controls was specified for the project, delivering much needed control for both visual effects and sustainability.

The Pharos system was identified as the right technology for the project by system integrator Keystone Technologies. A trusted partner of national grid operator Fluvius since 2018, Keystone Technologies has provided lighting control system design, integration, and programming for various public lighting initiatives. Building on this established relationship, Keystone Technologies was appointed to deliver the lighting control for the Antwerp Central Station project, with Fluvius serving as the lighting grid operator.

A Pharos Designer LPC (Lighting Playback Controller) with two universes of control is managing 820 luminaires across this large-scale installation via Art-Net for precise DMX lighting control. The LPC is also controlling the power supply relays via a TCP-Modbus IO Module.

The Designer LPC features individually controllable and independently running timelines and scenes. Automatic scheduled playback is provided by the LPC’s real-time clock, and location settings ensure programming associated with daylight is accurate all year round for local sunrise and sunset timings.

Local access and override controls are provided by a Pharos Designer TPS 8 (Touch Panel Station 8) for manual on-site control of power modes and an interface for local maintenance via seasonal or test scenarios. The Designer TPS is an elegant interface with a customisable, capacitive touchscreen, compatible with any Pharos Designer controller. It allows for direct communication with the control system for real-time adjustments, as well as secure access for maintenance personnel to prevent unauthorised changes.

The Pharos system is working collaboratively with the SixEye platformto provide a cloud-based user interface for monitoring, scheduling, and manual remote control of the site. Having worked with Pharos Architectural Controls on a wide variety of projects, Keystone Technologies were easily able to demonstrate the exceptional capability and reliability of their solutions.

Mark de Gruyter, Sales Director at Pharos Architectural Controls said: “The Central Station in Antwerp is a hugely iconic building due to its unique and eye-catching architecture. The illuminations have truly enhanced this stunning traditional structure through the application of sophisticated white light, as well as illuminating the surrounding area to make it feel safer and more welcoming. Plus, with the added control, it contributes to the building, and wider city’s commitment to developing more sustainable and efficient environments. It’s always a great achievement when technology from Pharos is supporting such a high-profile project.”

Steve De Busschere, Founder at Keystone Technologies said: “We were delighted to be appointed to work alongside Fluvius once again on this impressive public lighting project. After understanding the brief, we knew straight away the LPC and TPS from Pharos offered the functionality and reliability we needed. Adding to this, their seamless integration to work alongside the SixEye platform made the project run even more smoothly and to time.”

Susanna Antico, Owner of Susanna Antico Lighting Design Studio, now Loomit studio, states: “The design is an intricate reflection of the constant movement and vibrancy of the station and surrounding area. It is representative of Antwerp as an active, dynamic and contemporary city. It has been enabled and brought to its successful conclusion by the efficient collaboration of all the project’s partners, including Pharos Architectural Controls.”

The new lighting project for Antwerp Central Station has created visual interest and enhances the perception of the rich architectural details. It is also delivering a comfortable ambience for those passing through quickly to easily find their way, but also for those looking to enjoy a moment of relaxation.

Solutions On Stage Performs Remedial Works at MADS Little Theatre

Formed in 1947 above a butcher’s shop in the town centre, Macclesfield Amateur Dramatic Society
(MADS) was created with one main purpose – to foster and promote theatre in Macclesfield by
giving local people the opportunity to perform on stage. Fast forward almost eighty years and the
Society is still going strong, having now produced over 250 main season productions, along with
several one act shows, studio pieces as well as festival entries. Since 1954, MADS’ home has been a
purpose-built ‘Little Theatre’ situated on Lord Street and has been upgraded accordingly over the
years; now even boasting a bar and lounge area. Following a mechanical inspection conducted by
Solutions On Stage, the company was asked to carry out some remedial works within the theatre’s
main performance space – to ensure it was safety compliant.

Solutions On Stage was first contacted by MADS Management Member John Chandler back in 2023, to carry out some initial remedial works. They were asked to return the following year, in order toconduct the venue’s annual mechanical inspection. John explains: “As an amateur dramatics society,
we hold ourselves to the highest industry standards – not just in terms of the performances but also
the venue in which we perform. We needed the Solutions On Stage team to compliance check all of
the bars, winches and ropes above the main stage, as well as the bars in the auditorium and studio”.
This inspection was carried out by Solution On Stage’s Technical Director Darren Williams, with the team uncovering several mechanical issues, as well as equipment – such as the original Hemp Set bars – that was non-compliant to the latest industry standards. John comments: “Regulations and standards, when it comes to theatre compliance, can often be a minefield! That’s why it was so great to see how communicative and transparent Darren and his team were when it came to explaining the situation, what needed repairing and how they were going to do this. They were also very
accommodating when it came to our budget, as well as the time-frame in which they needed to
deliver this”.

The Solutions On Stage team shortly returned to MADS Little Theatre where they spent three days
carrying out the remedial works. Darren explains: “In terms of the unrated trussing with poor
suspensions, we supplied and installed four new suspensions, from back-to-back Unistrut channel
cantilevered off the main structural steel into the roof space. These suspensions comprised of 6mm
OD steel wire rope, bottle screws, shackles and 50mm bar clamps. For the advanced lighting bar, we
supplied and installed four new suspensions from the same Unistrut, whilst for the front-of-house
lighting booms, we re-fixed them to the walls using Doughty ceiling saddle/universal coupler
arrangements.

He continues: “We also had to update the existing curtain track, which meant supplying and
installing four new suspensions from the existing truss grid. Finally, with the Hemp Sets, we supplied
and installed replacement aluminium bars of a 48.3mm OD and 4mm wall thickness. Once these
were in-place, we then tested the unrated static bars, before labelling accordingly with a safe
working load and providing certification for all works”.

The remedial works are now complete and have made a significant impact to the Little Theatre,
which has just announced its latest season. John states: “We were delighted with the service that
Solutions On Stage provided and will continue using them for our annual inspection moving forward.
They’re a very friendly and helpful team who go above and beyond; giving us the peace of mind that
our theatre is now safety compliant”.

Darren concludes: “As a company, compliance lies at the heart of everything we do. It’s our role to
work with venues such as MADS Little Theatre to demystify what can often be confusing safety
regulations and ensure they’re aware of what needs to be carried out – and then put in place a plan
in which this can be delivered. We really enjoyed working in such a beautiful and historic venue and
are delighted to see the impact our work has had”.

Peter Small & White Light – Partners in Paradise

White Light (WL), a d&b solutions company, is proud to have supported the latest immersive production from The Lost Estate: Paradise Under the Stars. Set in a reimagined 1950s Havana, this Cuban cabaret experience has transformed a “secretive” venue in London’s Earl’s Court into the iconic Tropicana Club since March 2025.

Lighting Designer Peter Small, a long-standing creative partner of The Lost Estate, was once again tasked with shaping the visual world of the production. To realise his ambitious lighting concept, he partnered with WL to supply a comprehensive lighting package, including a substantial amount of period-authentic fixtures.

With a setting steeped in rhythm, romance, and rich folklore, Small’s approach was rooted in capturing the explosive energy of 1950s Havana through light. “The vision was to create a transportive, immersive atmosphere—one that celebrates the colour, texture and vibrancy of Cuban nightlife,” he explains. “We wanted every lighting cue to support the feeling of being swept into a living, breathing paradise.”
The lighting design plays a key role in shaping the emotional arc of the evening. Working across a dynamic, multi-perspective space, the rig was designed to guide focus, manage visual rhythm, and maintain clarity within the show’s layered choreography. Colour was used both symbolically and atmospherically, drawing from detailed historical research to construct a palette that was bold yet cohesive.

“To balance energy and emotion, we built in moments of contrast—quiet, intimate scenes offset against high-octane musical numbers,” Small adds. “This ensured each moment landed with full impact.”
Authenticity was key. The lighting rig featured period-appropriate Fresnel fixtures, positioned low and close to the audience to evoke the warmth and intimacy of a mid-century nightclub. “Every detail mattered,” says Small. “We wanted the audience to feel as though they had stepped into a genuine 1950s venue—not a modern interpretation.”

Collaborating closely with Production Electrician James Smellie and the wider creative team from early stages, Small faced the unique challenge of working with a monochrome set—where all depth and emotion needed to be delivered through lighting alone. “This required a high degree of planning, along with a diverse and dynamic lighting rig,” he explains. “With a white set as our canvas, we relied on multi-spectral fixtures and layered cues to transform the environment moment by moment.”
To balance the period aesthetic with the technical demands of immersive storytelling, the team incorporated a blend of traditional and innovative tools. Pixel tape, Vari*Lite VL500DB Tungsten, and vintage-inspired cabochons were used alongside automated tracking solutions such as Zactrack, which allowed precise, seamless followspot functionality within the performance space. “Zactrack was instrumental in tracking performer movement, allowing for seamless cueing in a constantly shifting environment. Tom Davis’ programming was exceptional,” Small notes.

Throughout the design process, WL provided end-to-end support, working closely with the creative team to source and deliver a robust and responsive lighting solution. “WL has been a trusted partner on many of our productions,” says Small. “Their attention to detail, deep technical knowledge, and commitment to supporting our creative goals make them integral to our process.”

Dom Yates, Head of Lighting at WL, adds: “This production presented a unique challenge, requiring a carefully curated rig that avoided modern LED multi-emitter fixtures. Drawing from our extensive inventory, we supplied a bespoke package including Martin MAC Quantum Profiles, Chauvet COLORdash, ETC Source 4 Series 2 Lustrs, Birdies, Minuette Fresnels, Cantata Fresnel, and the ETC Gio @5 console. We even reintroduced the Vari*Lite VL500DB Tungsten to help capture the precise atmosphere the team envisioned. It was a meticulous process, but one we were proud to support, and the results speak for themselves.”

When asked to share a favourite moment from the production, Small reflects on the emotional high point of the show: “There’s a scene where the pace slows, and the whole room holds still. It’s a rare breath in the whirlwind, and then, slowly, the energy builds to an explosive crescendo. You look around and see every face lit with joy, pride, and fulfilment. That shared moment makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

With critical acclaim and audience praise following its debut, Paradise Under the Stars continues to shine brightly, and White Light is proud to have played a role in bringing its story to light!

Illuminating Luxury – The Lighting Transformation at V Mayfair Health Club, London

Nestled in one of London’s most desirable and prestigious neighbourhoods, V Mayfair is a luxury gym, fitness, and wellness centre renowned for its sophisticated ambience and state-of-the-art facilities. More than just a fitness club, V Mayfair offers an exclusive, immersive experience designed to combine comfort, style, and wellbeing. Every detail from the elegantly appointed interiors to the expert, attentive staff reinforces its position as a premier destination for health and luxury.

Truly Lighting collaborated closely with the project architects LXA, alongside Robert Clift and the client to help bring the visuals to life for the stunning health club.

David Rooney, Design Director from LXA commented: “We developed the conceptual brief for V in close collaboration with our client. The design narrative is built around Five pillars of wellness: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social & Spiritual. In combining these fundamental platforms, we have curated a health club experience that provides a haven for wellness and solace in the heart of Mayfair”.

Recessed LED slots were installed in the entranceway and to frame the backlit ‘V’ behind the reception desk – creating a luxury feel to the project. Throughout the club, backlit mirrors provide soft, even lighting that eliminates shadows while creating a contemporary and inviting atmosphere.

Additional lighting integrated between timber panels enhances the sense of depth and interest, highlighting different layers of illumination throughout the space. Due to exposed services in the ceiling, most fixtures are suspended, with a combination of linear and circular LED pendants used to provide general lighting and subtly distinguish different zones within the club.

As part of the renovations, an underground car park was repurposed, into a beautiful, new Pilates studio for members. The space allows for the ceiling lights to be switched off, relying solely on the gentle illumination from the backlit mirrors. This creates a soft, flattering ambience and helps prevent glare in members’ eyes while they are lying on the equipment.

In addition to exercise spaces, the changing rooms underwent a huge transformation. Discreet LED lighting above the lockers, integrated within the joinery, along with backlit mirrors and decorative wall lights, all work together to elevate the sense of luxury and create a soft, inviting glow throughout the space.

The result is a sophisticated well-lit, performance-driven setting that not only energises members but also reinforces V Mayfair’s status as a leading destination for fitness and well-being in one of the city’s most prestigious areas.

The magic of light amid sea and nature at Villa Calanova, Elba Island

A breathtaking landscape unfolds before the eyes at Villa Calanova, a charming retreat on Elba Island, recently renovated by photographer and interior designer Adriano Bacchella. Surrounded by fragrant maritime pines, the villa sits atop a small headland overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea – a haven of tranquillity, bathed in the vivid hues of sea and sky, where time seems to slow down.

Spread across two levels, Villa Calanova features a living room, a kitchen, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms, all thoughtfully designed to enhance the natural light and the authentic character of the island. Natural materials – particularly wood – and warm tones blend harmoniously with rustic furnishings and the contemporary design of Catellani & Smith lighting.

The lighting experience begins at the entrance with Lederam W1 wall lamps, finished in elegant copper leaf. In the cozy ground-floor living area, CicloItalia floor lamp, in brass, and the striking Macchina della Luce – one of Catellani & Smith’s most iconic creations – set the tone. Suspended between art and design, this sculptural piece commands attention, not only for its generous size but also for the gold-coloured leaf that covers its three discs, casting a warm, enveloping light in the room.

The kitchen, characterized by exposed wooden beams and a rustic stone oven, is lit by Lucenera 503 and by the hand-painted PostKrisi 51 in white, suspended above the dining table.

The CicloItalia wall lamp, with two flexible arms, illuminates the staircase leading to the upper level, which hosts two bedrooms and a bathroom.

In the first bedroom overlooking the sea, the ambiance is both intimate and refined. On either side of the bed, two EC301 wall lamps, with their clean, functional design, offer direct and comfortable light – ideal for evening reading. The space is further enhanced by the dramatic Lederam Manta pendant lamp, with its soft white shade and golden interior, adding a touch of elegance.

In the second bedroom, a Turciù pendant lamp with nine flexible arms takes centre stage. On the nightstand it has been places a Lola table lamp, whose flexible arm allows for precise lighting adjustments to suit different needs.

In the bathroom, above the washbasin unit, the minimal elegance of Light Stick in satin gold creates a delicate play of light and shadow on the wall, while a six flexible arms CicloItalia with a black base lights the shower area, enhancing the overall ambiance.

Outside Villa Calanova, the magic continues. In the intimate covered patio, a cluster of suspended More lamps glows softly among the wooden beams, like luminous fruit hanging in mid-air, while the subtle radiance of Fil de Fer lights up the outdoor dining table.

In front of the villa, a pine forest opens onto the sea—a natural corridor leading to a secluded relaxation area immersed in greenery, made enchanting by two golden Fil de Fer floor lamps and by the ethereal Medousê. Here, amidst the scents of resin and sea breeze, nature becomes a stage for peace and beauty. As you walk through the vegetation, delicate lights – Syphasera, Syphasfera, and Syphaduepassi – emerge like blossoms from the ground, infusing the landscape with a magical glow.
