Apprentices Retrofit 450 Luminaires with TRILUX LiveLink SwarmSens in Heidenheim Car Park

A recent project with Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG – Unternehmensgruppe
has shown how quick and straightforward it can be to modernise car park lighting using
TRILUX LiveLink SwarmSens. In the underground car park beneath the Congress Centrum,
outdated 58W fluorescent luminaires were replaced with an energy-efficient LED solution.
TRILUX recommended a 1:1 replacement with Aragon Fit luminaires and LiveLink SwarmSens —
and the Stadtwerke team approved the solution. The entire refurbishment was then handed over to
apprentice electricians as a real-world learning project, thanks to the ease of installation.

Lighting management for all

LiveLink SwarmSens is designed for simple retrofits in car parks and stairwells with up to 4,069
light points. All daylight and presence sensors are built into the luminaires, with configuration via
the SwarmSens app. Basic programming can also be done directly on the controller where app
access is not ideal.

“Thanks to the simple configuration and commissioning, smart lighting can be implemented with
minimal effort, even in cost-sensitive projects,” explains Thomas Roberts, Solution Manager Light
Management TRILUX.

Hands-on learning

As there was no time pressure, apprentices refurbished the 450 luminaires during regular
operations. After training at TRILUX HQ in Arnsberg, they were fully equipped for the job.

“The installation was relatively simple. After the power supply to the old lights was switched off, we
simply removed and dismantled them. We fitted the adapters supplied by TRILUX for the new
luminaires without any problems. The wireless connectivity between fittings made a huge
difference, and the programming was quick and intuitive,” says Mihály, apprentice electronics
technician at Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG – Unternehmensgruppe.

An excellent result

Energy consumption has been cut by 85%, and the new Aragon Fit luminaires create a brighter,
more welcoming environment. Their translucent diffuser and wide-beam optics produce a soft
ceiling glow that reduces the typical “cave effect” found in underground car parks.

“The new installation offers a much higher level of brightness. In addition, the partial lighting
approach is not only visually appealing, it also avoids unnecessary energy use by preventing the
entire space being lit at once,” adds Aaron Czogalla, Team Leader Technical Maintenance
Management / General Construction and Refurbishment at Stadtwerke Heidenheim AG –
Unternehmensgruppe.

From improved lighting quality to hands-on skills development, the project highlights the practical
benefits of TRILUX LiveLink SwarmSens and the ease of delivering energy-efficient, modern
lighting for car parks.

LumiAdd Celebrates the Successful Conclusion of Inaugural “3D Unleashed” Luminaire Design Competition

LumiAdd has proudly announced the successful conclusion of its first-ever 3D Unleashed luminaire design competition, an ambitious new initiative created to give lighting designers, architects, and interior designers unconstrained creative freedom. The initiative underscores LumiAdd’s commitments to sustainability and design freedom – values that sit at the heart of both the founders and company’s mission.

Sustainability has been integral to LumiAdd’s approach, with all the products they make using plant-based polymers and additive manufacturing. The 3D Unleashed competition provided an empowering opportunity to showcase the environmental advantages of 3D printing alongside the boundless design possibilities it offers.

Freed from the constraints of traditional tooling, designers were able to explore intricate geometries, organic forms, and unique textures that would be impossible, or prohibitively expensive, through conventional manufacturing. 3D printing manufacturing allows concepts to move from imagination to reality at speed, accelerating both prototyping and refinement, and of course, project delivery.

“We launched 3D Unleashed to spread the word about the design freedom we offer and to see what designers could create,” said Jamie Norris Green, co-founder of LumiAdd. “We believe 3D printing is having a transformative effect on the lighting industry – it supports local manufacturing, speeds up innovation, and minimises creative constraints.”

Jamie also addressed industry perceptions: “Some still hold the belief that heavier luminaires made from excessive amounts of aluminium are inherently better. While this may hold some truth for certain applications, we see it as unnecessary. Our philosophy is to use the right amount of carbon-intensive materials, favour sustainable alternatives, and embrace greater flexibility in colours, textures, and finishes. Every new technology faces resistance – it’s our role to prove its value for the future.”

The competition encouraged entrants to submit purely conceptual ideas without the need for fully developed, production-ready designs. This freedom resulted in an inspiring variety of submissions that celebrated both form and the versatility of 3D printing.

Lewis Smith, co-founder of LumiAdd shared “The design concepts we received were inspiring, bold, and creative. When it came to shortlisting the entrants, it was a real struggle for both Jamie and I, and the judges. Each concept had taken varying inspiration in form, texture and function. Overall, we are delighted at the traction it received, and we are elated for the winner.”

LumiAdd is now turning its attention to bringing the winning concept, Flames of the Aegean by Effie Polydouli, an accomplished interior architect and lighting designer, to life. The company’s ultimate goal is to develop the design into a commercially available product range.

Looking ahead, LumiAdd plans to run the 3D Unleashed competition annually, building a growing “Creator Series” that champions innovation, sustainability, and the creative potential of additive manufacturing.

MODERN DOWNLIGHTS: PROVIDING CUSTOMISATION FOR ALL PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

While downlights might be viewed as a functional element of a lighting design, this does not mean that flexibility isn’t important. Modern downlight ranges are offering increasing levels of customisation to meet the individual needs of each project. Nelo Neves – Managing Director from LEDVANCE UK explores this further.

Downlights are an important part of any well-designed lighting scheme. When chosen carefully, they provide optimal lighting conditions in any environment. Downlights are also incredibly adaptable; suitable for a range of applications including offices, public areas, hospitality spaces and ancillary rooms.

Yet for too long, downlights were seen as an easy solution to simply illuminate a space. This is no longer the case, as downlights now play a much more integral role in meeting the individual needs of different projects. Forward-thinking manufacturers are creating downlight ranges that offer both pre-selected and on-site customisation, delivering a flexible approach to their use.

Let’s explore this through an example. LEDVANCE has recently launched the Biolux HCL TW Zigbee Downlight Gen 2. As well as offering outstanding lighting quality, thanks to tunable white functionality, the light colour can be selected to suit each application – from 2700K to 6500K.

Taking this a step further, by using a suitable control unit, the HCL function dynamically adjusts the lighting to natural changes in daylight. By controlling the simulation of a natural daylight curve, this creates positive biological effects that supports occupant wellbeing.

Optional accessories also aid flexibility. Downlight ranges that offer different ceiling mounted frames and replacement front bezels in different sizes and colours ensure harmonious integration across any application’s interior aesthetic.

There are other elements to consider when specifying a downlight. For example – and this is particularly important in office settings – modern downlights offer UGR ≤ 19 and flicker-free light, which can be further achieved by selecting beam angles for 55° to 60°. The removal of glare is also beneficial in educational and care facilities, as it reduces the risk of eye strain and fatigue even when working in the light for long periods of time.

At LEDVANCE glare-free lighting is a specification that is offered with the Downlight Comfort Gen 2. And also in the range is an opal variant, with beam angles from 95° to 100° - providing economical and pleasant lighting for hallways, foyers and stairwells.

Additionally, appropriateness of a downlight for installation limitations needs to be assessed. Take for example the Downlight Universal. As a new addition to the LEDVANCE range, the downlight boasts installation flexibility and ease with its rail mounted adjustable springs.

Available in two sizes, 200mm and 300mm, the fixture features adjustable springs ranging from 65mm to 185mm and 65mm to 260mm, retrospectively. This allows contractors to quickly and easily install the semi-recessed fitting and connect the power supply, saving both labour time and costs. Plus, with this feature, it also ensures that future replacements can be installed without having to navigate ceiling damage.

One of the great benefits in choosing a downlight range that offers a plethora of individual options is uniformity over visual appeal. The same downlight can be chosen for different areas or zones of a project to give harmony across aesthetics, while customisation options allow for various elements to be selected as needed. Using the example of glare, some areas will require the higher levels of Unified Glare Rating, while others – particularly transitory areas where people do not linger – will not need this elevated specification.

When it comes to on-site customisation, this capability is becoming more commonplace. For example, LEDVANCE’s MULTI SELECT approach provides the option of adjusting a number of their downlights on site, MULTI LUMEN allows the luminous flux to be set directly at the driver, while MULTI COLOUR enables the light colour to be selected simply by using a slider switch.

Manufacturers such as LEDVANCE are certainly recognising the greater attention that downlights need. With more contemporary, well-structured downlight portfolios now being available, offering clever solutions for any installation, there’s never been a better time to select a downlight that best fits each and every application.

Solutions On Stage Provides Hot Power Installation to Thornden Hall

Having first opened in 2003, Thornden Hall Arts Centre provides support for the Performing Arts
Departments in Thornden School, as well as playing host to local amateur groups and professional
companies. This multi-purpose venue has a capacity of 386 and its versatility means it can be readily
adapted for music, dance, drama, conferences, presentations and cinema. In addition, there are
specialist music, drama and dance studios, as well as a foyer and licensed bar. In recent years, the
venue decided to upgrade the traditional tungsten fixtures within its main performance space to LED
technology – a process that has been supported by Solutions On Stage. As such, the company was
called upon to alter the Hall’s existing dimming system to become an LED lighting infrastructure –
drawing on a hot power solution.

The Manager of Thornden Hall Arts Centre is Neil Daykin, who, alongside the day-to-day running of the venue, is responsible for overseeing its technical system. He comments: “We have a long-
standing relationship with Solutions On Stage – particularly their Technical Director Darren Williams.
I know they are able to provide a service that is of the highest standard – and one that fits our
budget. For a number of years, they’ve provided us with EICR and LOLER inspections and, given their
knowledge and experience, were the obvious choice when it came to upgrading our existing lighting
infrastructure”.

With an upgrade programme of LED lighting fixtures already underway, the brief given to Solutions
On Stage was to replace Thornden’s current dimming system with something more suitable for
these new fixtures. Darren explains: “Neil wanted a simple solution that would not result in an
excessively electronic infrastructure, as well as match his budgetary requirements. We recognised
that additions such as DMX controlled switching were not really a necessity and therefore decided to
go with the more fundamental system of grid switches and RCBOs”.

Following a site visit, the team spent several days at the venue installing the new infrastructure. This included removing eight existing dimmer supplies and associated accessories. Four existing dimmers
were removed with two retained; with the remaining pair fitted with a 32A mains supply and 2
Socapex connectors to allow selected circuits to continue to be dimmed as required. All multicore
cabling that was currently terminated within the dimmers was removed, rerouted and re-
terminated to new, 30way grid switch assemblies. This allowed existing circuits to be switched on
and off, in pairs, as required.

The company then installed two 32A interlock sockets to the stage truss and two 32A interlock
sockets to the Front-of-House truss; enabling the use of temporary power for truss mounted
dimmers if required. They also provided and installed new containment and cabling infrastructure
where required, using existing cables where possible. Following this, the team carried out a full
electrical and mechanical inspection, conducting relevant tests in accordance with PUWER, LOLER
and EAWR. The necessary certifications, along with operating and maintenance manuals, were also
provided.

When it comes to the impact the upgrade has made within the venue, Neil comments: “The new set-
up has made a huge difference. As the majority of our rig is now LED, the switching system is simple,
robust and logical. We've done away with having to locally power non-dim items and find domestic
13a supplies to feed them – instead now having an entirely considered and unified approach.
Solutions On Stage also came up with additional solutions for those locations that still require
dimmers to ensure that our ongoing transition remains as smooth and seamless as possible.
He concludes: “As always, Gareth, Darren and the team were prompt, clear and polite. They
managed to fit around our busy schedule and work quickly and efficiently when doing so. It’s fair to
say that Solutions On Stage have become an important part of what we’re trying to achieve here at
Thornden – and we're grateful for their continued support”.
If your performance venue requires any upgrade works, then please feel free to contact our friendly
team at enquiries@solutionsonstage.co.uk.
